As of 2021, a participatory guarantee system or PGS has been adopted by 43 vegetable cooperatives in the capital of Vietnam, Hanoi. PGS is now recognised as a certification system for safe vegetables in Hanoi as well as in Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam, and Da Nang. How has this been achieved, and what does it mean for access to healthy and safe food in Vietnam? In this article, we tell you all about it.

On 12 March 2021, at the Agricultural Extension Centre, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuyen Quang province, a Memorandum of Understanding Signing Ceremony was held between the Provincial Agricultural Extension Centre, Agricultural Service Centre of districts and Minh Tam Poultry Breeding and Production Cooperative to coordinate the implementation of the model of linking cucumber production and consumption for 2021 in the province.

Between April 2015 and June 2016, VECO Vietnam and Duy Tien district’s Women’s Union supported farmers in Trac Van commune to strengthen a Participatory Guarantee System for organic vegetables and to improve their business, production and organisational skills. The project has now come to an end but the results of this pilot experience demonstrate the benefits of PGS for farmers and consumers and call for the upscaling of this successful model.

In Vietnam, farmers generally apply chemicals improperly; they even use banned and restricted pesticides leading to cases of food poisoning.
